This essay is divided into three parts, each of which deals with a particular theme and each of which can, to some extent, stand alone. However, this is a single essay with a unified argument, not three separate essays, and needs ideally to be read as a whole. Each part is further divided into two sub-sections. Click on the title of each part to go to that part of the essay.

Part 1: On miniature tracks
I. Leisure, hobbies, and historians
II. Reality in microcosm

Part 2: From model engineering to railway modelling
III. Model engineering and the rise of railway modelling
IV. Resemblance, reality, and rival realisms

Part 3: Model modernity and nostalgia
V. Railway realism and model modernities
VI. Steam, diesel, and the old-time railway
